Tinubu schedules his July inauguration expanding the green economy committee

The Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions now has a larger membership thanks to President Bola Tinubu's actions. The President revealed the identities of the 26 members of the same committee that he chaired on May 19, 2024. The United Nations launched the Green Economic Programme to facilitate and promote investment in green and low-carbon sectors and low-carbon development by member nations. However, the president has appointed more members to the committee, according to a statement made on Sunday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations. The announcement said, "The President has approved the expansion of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions' membership." Imohiosen continued, saying that July will mark the committee's formal launch.

The extra members consist of a delegate from the following federal ministries: NNPCL; Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology; Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas); Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. Mr. Somkele Awa-Kalu, a representative of the Energy Transition Office, and Ms. Yasmin Mohammed, Special Assistant to the President on Energy Transition, are among the others. "In order to achieve his administration's agenda on climate action and green industrial growth for the long-term benefit of the Nigerian people and Africans at large, the President emphasizes diligence, dedication, and patriotism in the execution of this critical national assignment," the statement continued.

Imohiosen also said to bring clarity to the functions of the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action within the climate and green economy ecosystem, the president has approved the terms of reference for the pioneering Office.
He said, “By the President’s directive, the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action shall be:
“The lead negotiator on climate-related matters on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, reporting directly to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“ The lead negotiator on the carbon market and management initiatives on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a mandate to integrate the work of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan into the climate action plans of the Federal Government of Nigeria, reporting directly to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Imohiosen added that the office would be the supervising interface between the Secretariat of the National Council on Climate Change and the NCCC Supervising Council, which is chaired by the President.

The statement further read, “Coordinator of all climate action-related activities across Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, legislative, and subnational entities which directly impact the President’s climate action and green economic agenda with a mandate to directly engage other nations, international organizations, and non-governmental entities to build coalitions and advance global climate goals in accordance with Nigeria’s national interest.

“The focal point of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s engagement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Conference of the Parties meetings, and other related international meetings on climate-related and green economic matters.

“The coordinator of activities of all relevant Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies towards the successful fulfilment of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions.

“The secretary of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, which is chaired by the President.

“The chief diplomat and lead representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on all climate-related engagements and negotiations while supervising the Energy Transition Office.

The focal point authority for all non-executive tasks pertaining to the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) and the person designated to supervise the secretariat's operations and activities in order to regularly report to the President in between NCCC Supervisory Council meetings.

"The primary point of contact for interactions with the Federal Ministry of Power, the Federal Bank of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and other important Federal Government of Nigeria institutions on the management and coordinating of donor funding related to climate change, financing for renewable energy, and the promotion of green industrial growth."
